Microwave: A Boon or the Curse?

As technology is taking over all spectrums of our lifestyle, the kitchen too is flooded with the latest innovative gadgets to make our life easy and one of them is a microwave oven.

The microwave is one of the most common modern appliances seen in all contemporary kitchens. However, in the whirlpool of information and news with contrasting views on the use of microwaves in daily lifestyle, the common man is usually in dilemma -to use the microwave or not, and if yes how and when? So, we bring to you a rational overview of the use of microwaves.

How Microwave Works?

The ways of energy used by microwave ovens are similar to radio waves. However, these waves are much shorter. Also, these waves affect the food's water and other molecules which are electrically asymmetrical. On vibration, these molecules build up thermal energy, in simple words; heat energy causes the temperature of food to rise up. This is how food is cooked in a microwave machine.

Are Microwave Ovens Safe?

When exposed to excessive heat, some nutrients of the food break down and do not benefit the body. This holds true for cooking on a stove or oven too. However, microwave cooking time is usually shorter and hence it does a better job of preserving these nutrients. The best cooking method to retain the nutrients is the one that cooks in less time, with less water and less heat. Microwaving meets all these criteria. Using the microwave with a small amount of water essentially steams food from the inside out.

Does microwaving food cause cancer?

The American Cancer Society (ACS) said that microwaves do not make food radioactive, and do not use x-rays or gamma rays, which can damage DNA inside the cells and result in cancer. Microwaves heat food, but they do not change its chemical or molecular structure of it. This means they do not make food anymore carcinogenic. Moreover, there is no evidence that microwaves pose a health risk to people when used appropriately, the organization added. Meanwhile, studies have found that heating food in plastic containers in microwaves may release cancer-causing chemicals from the plastic into the food. Scientists have also warned that microwaving food in plastics puts you at a higher risk of infertility, hypertension, obesity, and diabetes. Hence, experts suggest using glass containers and to avoid or reducing the use of plastic as much as possible. Also, damaged or broken microwaves could pose a hazard to people as they can leak a higher amount of radiation.

Things to remember while buying Microwaves

• Size of the microwave: The size of the microwave purely depends on the number of people to be served, that is, the quantity of food to be prepared at one time.
• Brand of microwave: It is essential to buy a trusted brand in the microwave to ensure that it meets all the quality standards as described by the governing body. Also, check the warranty terms and service provided after the purchase by the brand.
• Power Rating: Higher the power rating, the lesser the cooking time. This helps in keeping the nutritional value of the food intact.
